THE SCIENCE BEHIND INTERMITTENT FASTING

Dr. Usman Javed

International journal of applied biology and forensic · 2019

Abstract

Intermittent fasting (IF) has gained significant attention as a dietary strategy for weight management, metabolic health, and disease prevention. Unlike traditional calorie-restriction diets, IF focuses on the timing of food intake, allowing periods of fasting and feeding. This review explores the biological mechanisms underlying the benefits of intermittent fasting, including effects on metabolism, cellular repair, circadian rhythms, and aging. It also examines clinical evidence from human and animal studies, discusses potential risks, and highlights areas for future research in this promising nutritional intervention.
