Abstract
Over the past decades, there has been a steady global increase in life expectancy, which reflects advances in healthcare, scientific research, and social development. However, alongside longevity, there is also a notable rise in the number of years people live with chronic diseases and reduced functional capacity, which significantly affects quality of life in older age. In industrialized countries, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, alongside malignancies, remain the leading causes of death. Against this backdrop, the concept of physiological longevity—a lifespan during which individuals maintain physiological functions, psycho-emotional balance, and social activity—gains particular relevance. This paper explores the role of physical activity and sports as critical factors in the promotion of physiological longevity. Regular physical exercise has been shown to enhance cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and nervous system function, reduce the pace of biological aging, and lower the risk of premature death. International research supports the preventive and therapeutic potential of physical activity in managing more than 25 chronic conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, depression, and osteoporosis. The World Health Organization emphasizes physical activity as a key strategy for extending healthy life expectancy and preserving mobility, cognitive abilities, and emotional well-being in older adults. The aim of the study is to scientifically substantiate the influence of systematic physical and sports activity on the development of physiological longevity. This includes analyzing the physiological and functional indicators of individuals engaged in regular physical activity, taking into account age-related changes, and identifying strategic priorities for physical culture and sports professionals in promoting active aging. The research addresses multiple objectives: examining modern concepts of physiological longevity; analyzing the influence of physical activity on functional capacity and aging; establishing correlations between motor activity levels and physiological markers in the elderly; and formulating practical recommendations for optimal physical activity regimes. The article also underscores the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to the design of longevity-supporting exercise programs, incorporating aspects of physiology, psychology, gerontology, and social care. A separate focus is given to the gut microbiome, whose balance and functionality significantly affect overall health and aging processes. Recent studies reveal that aging is accompanied by microbiota instability, increasing susceptibility to inflammation, immune decline, and metabolic disorders. These changes may exacerbate chronic conditions typical of old age, such as cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic syndrome. The paper argues that maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, alongside regular physical activity, represents a promising direction in the pursuit of physiological longevity. Physical activity is a foundational component of health-preserving strategies aimed at extending not only lifespan but also healthspan(definition). Professionals in physical culture and sports possess both the methodological and social tools to implement these strategies effectively, playing a central role in the support of active and healthy aging.
