Validated Epigenetic and Biological Aging Clocks in Ophthalmology: A Systematic Scoping Review

Sirawich Chaiparnich

· 2026

Abstract

This systematic scoping review maps the application of validated epigenetic (DNA-methylation) and biological aging clocks to ocular health and disease, using epigenetic age acceleration as the primary organizing lens. It charts which clocks, tissues, ocular diseases, exposure constructs, and study designs have been studied; describes the direction and consistency of reported associations without pooling; and identifies evidence gaps and a research agenda. Conducted per PRISMA-ScR (Tricco 2018) using the Arksey & O'Malley / Levac / JBI framework. No effect hypothesis is tested; the deliverable is a comprehensive evidence map.
